The nursery for Martin is decorated in Winnie the Pooh. We have a mobile that plays the theme song. For those that don’t know, the chorus is:
Winnie the Pooh, Winnie the Pooh
Tubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff.
He’s Winnie the Pooh, Winnie the Pooh.
Willy nilly silly ole bear.
Tonight, Billy was singing it and I discovered his version of the lyrics:
Winnie the Pooh, Winnie the Pooh
Stubby little bear all stuffed with love.
We have been married 9 years as of today. Wow!
“Our wedding was many years ago. The celebration continues to this day.” - Gene Perret
“Infatuation is when you think he’s as sexy as Robert Redford, as smart as Henry Kissinger, as noble as Ralph Nader, as funny as Woody Allen, and as athletic as Jimmy Conners. Love is when you realize that he’s as sexy as Woody Allen, as smart as Jimmy Connors, as funny as Ralph Nader, as athletic as Henry Kissinger and nothing like Robert Redford – but you’ll take him anyway.” - Judith Viorst, Redbook, 1975
“Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking together in the same direction.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupery
“Without love, what are we worth? Eighty-nine cents! Eighty-nine cents worth of chemicals walking around lonely.” - M*A*S*H, Hawkeye
We just watched Lilo and Stitch. Funny movie!
“Oh, look, friendly little dolphin. They help sailors in the war… It’s a shark! It’s a shark and it ain’t friendly! It looks like a dolphin. Tricky fish! Tricky Fish!†- Pleakley
“Look! A mosquito has chosen me as her perch. She’s so beautiful. There’s another one, and another. It’s a whole flock. They like me. They’re nuzzling my flesh with their noses. Now they’re… they’re… Aaaaaaaah!” - Pleakley
“Thus far, you have been adrift in the sheltered harbor of my patience.” - Cobra Bubbles
“Earth is a protected wildlife refuge. See, we’re using it to replenish the mosquito population, which I remind you is an endangered species!” - Pleakley
“His destructive programming is taking effect. He’ll be irresistibly drawn to large cities where he’ll back up plumbing, reverse street signs, and steal everyone’s left shoe.” - Jumba
Monday, our neighbors, Tim and Kelly, had to put their dog down. Ben was 12 1/2 years old and his kidneys had failed. I know that they felt the same way about Ben as we felt about Ashley. We went through something similar with Ashley in the fall of 2003 and it was the toughest thing I’ve had to deal with. This reminded me of a prayer that my mom had framed for me a couple of years ago.
Here it goes:
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of mine.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though you had no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest — and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.
- Beth Norman Harris
Jules (Samuel Jackson) from the movie Pulp Fiction.
The full quote is:
There’s a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you. I been sayin’ that s**t for years. And if you ever heard it, it meant your a**. I never really questioned what it meant. I thought it was just a cold-blooded thing to say to a motherf****r before you popped a cap in his a**. But I saw some s**t this mornin’ made me think twice. Now I’m thinkin’: it could mean you’re the evil man. And I’m the righteous man. And Mr. 9mm here, he’s the shepherd protecting my righteous a** in the valley of darkness. Or it could be you’re the righteous man and I’m the shepherd and it’s the world that’s evil and selfish. I’d like that. But that s**t ain’t the truth. The truth is you’re the weak, and I’m the tyranny of evil men. But I’m tryin’, Ringo. I’m tryin’ real hard to be the shepherd.
One of my favorite sports movies, it’s a quote from The Replacements. Another good one from the movie, “Winners always want the ball when the game is on the line.”
This past Friday and Saturday at my son’s soccer practice and game, we played against kids that must be on growth hormones. These kids were HUGE. Our team suffer 3 injuries in less than 24 hours. Two hits to the face and one groin shot. The boy on our team who got hit in the groin told his father that night that he got hit in “the boys.” His father’s response was something like this:
“The first time is the worst, and it doesn’t get any better.”
Some good pain quotes:
“I’m not like other people. I can’t stand pain. It hurts me.” - Daffy Duck
“Pain don’t hurt.” - Patrick Swayze in Road House
“Pain is your friend, your ally. It will tell you when you are seriously injured. It will keep you awake and angry and remind you to finish the job and get the hell home. But you know the best thing about pain? It lets you know you’re not dead yet.” - the Master Chief in G.I. Jane
The movie “The Best of Times” was on this weekend. Not a particularly good movie, but I watched it anyway.
The setup for the quote is at the end of the movie during the football game. Kurt Russell’s team (Kurt Russell is the QB) just had a completion and the team is congratulating the receiver: “Good catch!”
Russell’s retort: “Good catch my ass! That’s what you’re supposed to do when the ball hits you in the hands!”
