Since the subject of Pocahontas came up in the last post, I thought I’d document here some information I was recently given. I’ve known since I was a child that my great grandfather (Charles Lunsford, Jr., where Martin gets his first name) was big into tracing our lineage and had documented that we are direct descendants of Pocahontas, but until recently, I hadn’t seen it.
Here we go. Each row represents one generation (husband and wife). Shaded boxes represents the child of the previous generation.
| John Rolfe | Pocahontas |
| Thomas Rolfe | Jane Poythress |
| Col. Robert Bolling | Jane Rolfe |
| Maj. John Bolling | Mary Kennon |
| Col. Richard Randolph | Jane Bolling |
| Archibald Cary | Mary Randolph |
| Robert Kincaid | Elizabeth Cary |
| Charles Irving | Mary Jane Kincaid |
| Joseph Kincaid Irving | Martha Ruffin Claiborne |
| Robert Taylor Berry | Martha Jane Irving |
| Charles Lunsford | Jane Rose Berry |
| Charles Lunsford, Jr. | Francis Thompson |
| William Baldwin Smith III | Martha Irving Lunsford |
| Edwin Watson Smith | Ellen Marie Insley |
| William Baldwin Smith IV | Martinah Lee DiSavino |
| William Baldwin Smith V Charles Martin Watson Smith |

Hi - I’m trying to to verify an ancestor of mine, Rebecca Bolling born 1670 in Northmberland, Virginia. She is the daughter of Jane Rolfe and Robert Bolling. The information I have on Robert is that he was born in 1646 in Londan (England) and died 1709 in Virgina. Jane Rolfe was born 1650 in Virginia and died 1676 Kippax Virginia. Based on the information I have, could my Jane Rolfe be the same as your Jane Rolfe? Thanks for your help.

Ann, I don’t have any of the details that my great grandfather put together. My folks still have all of the documentation. If I get a chance, I’ll take a look to see if any of the names you listed are mentioned.
Cindy, check out these links regarding Jane Rolfe and Robert Bolling. Unfortunately, I don’t see any reference to a Rebecca Bolling as a child of Jane Rolfe or his second wife, Anne Stith.

Thanks all for your replies. The more I’ve looked into it, I’ve determined that my Rebecca Bolling is NOT the daughter of Jane Rolfe. It was fun to think about while it lasted though! I’m new at all this, but it seems to me that for some it’s just easier to just fill in the blanks than to actually document - which I will attempt to do. In the meantime…if anyone has information on Rebecca Bolling (whose sister is Mary Bolling) who married Michael Pendergrass in 1685, please let me know. Thanks

Cindy,
I am very interested in any information you find out about this. In my family Genealogy book, it talks about Rebecca Bolling. Although I have not been able to find any concrete information to justify this but this is what is there.
Michael Prendergast (2nd Generation Pendegraft) was born about 1662 in England and died after 1690. It is believed he had returned to England and died there.
He married Rebecca Bolling in 1682 in Maryland. Family tradition says we are direct descendants of Pocahontas.
Michael apparently married into the Bolling family which descent from Thomas Rolfe, born 1616, son of John Rolfe and Pocahontas, 1595-1617. So she (Rebecca) would be the Great Grand Daughter of Pocahontas.
Michael was a Roman Catholic and his occupation was Drayman.
Michael and Rebecca’s children include:
John Prendergast of Norhumberland County Va., born in 1685 and died in 1715; a daughter, Mary, married Henry Hutson or Hudson. In the year of 1715 they were in the Northumberland County, Va., as Hutson was named on documents as administrator of estate of John (3).
Like I said the only information I could find is that Thomas Rolfe only had one child and it was a son, so I don’t know. I don’t know if this helped or not but like you said it is fun doing the research.

Hi Troy, thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that Jane Rolfe had a daughter named Rebecca - or any daughter for that matter. So Rebecca Bolling remains a mystery to me. Our Pendergrass family moved to N. Carolina where they lived for many generations. Eventually my line (which was no longer Pendergrass but Gunter/Wicker) migrated west. I would love to discuss this further with you if Admin. will give you my email. Thanks, Cindy

Bill,
You made a statement in a previous post:
“I have on this chart left by my father’s sister which states that Powhatan Bowling died at William Armistead Payne’s home.”
Can you tell me which Powhatan Bolling? If you are talking of Powhatan, son of Robert Bolling of Chellowe? If so, I would like to know more about the chart you mentioned. Thanks….

Hi Page,
Unfortunately, I received that email from Ann Rabb and don’t know anything about it. Perhaps she will reply here.

I am sorry it was unfortunate that I sent the email. Like everyone else, I am trying to connect the dots and am working from a pencil chart created 25 or 30 years ago which was done by my aunt and a cousin. There was supposed to be documentation verifying everything on the chart but some family “Thief” made off with the documentation. The file cabinet was sans info when I was told to check it. I have proven a good deal. I read concering Pochantas in the history of the Mineral Springs Baptist Church which was written by a cousin of my father. When I contacted someone in Gladstone, VA, I was told that the name Pochantas was used quite often. I was not aware that it would be so common in the 1800s. Sorry for the confusion. Ann Rabb
PS: I see a couple of other surnames that are familiar but I will wait until I KNOW more.

Powhatan Bolling Tindall, born 1786, died July 10, 1876, 90 years to the day. I am a gg grandson of William Armistead Payne and his wife Martha Jane Lucy Tindall. Martha’s Bible is in the Payne family’s possession listing the death of Powhatan Bolling Tindall. Martha was the daughter of Lewis Tindall of Buckingham County, VA. I am interested in obtaining information from Ann Rabb and Bill.

My great-grandmother, Doris Maude Blackwell-Desmond, was of African and Native American descent. She told me that her grandmother (paternal I believe) was named Pocahontas Bolling-Taylor, was from Virginia, and that our family were descendants of “the” Pocahontas. I’ve researched her claim to the best of my ability, but geneological records for African-Americans from that time period (1830-1840) are few and far between. If anyone can help me shed some light on my family mystery, I’d surely appreciate it.

We in our penciled report of our lineage have a Mary Boling born from mother Jane Rolfe and father John Boling who married twice.Marys’ fist marriage was to John Fleming and her second marriage was to William Bennet. Could this Mary Boiling be the sister to Rebbeca. To Cindy Rainey
