Last week some friends of ours let us know about a new radio station in Richmond: 98.9 Liberty. It plays a mix of pop and rock from the 70’s to the present. So far there are no commercials or DJs. If you are in or passing through Richmond, Virginia, give it a try.

98.9 ROCKS - I listen to it all day now…. LOVE THE MIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I moved here from Amityville,NY last year and the real horror wasn’t the house I once lived by - it was radio in Richmond. 98.1 is too light.Maybe not the same song twice in a day but the same songs every day. You can’t say enough bad things about (what mix)103.7 with out using four letter words. Except maybe THEY EVEN REPEAT SOFT & CONTEMPOARY TOO MUCH!!! Forget about all the rap stations and you can only take country for so long before you want to strangle all the unhappy lovers or send them to Texas with all their X’s!
Thanks for arriving I almost had to move back to NY!!
PS Some songs by Erasure would be apreciated.

I stumbled upon 98.9 last Friday at work. I thought that it was an interesting an novel experience in radio where you can hear 70’s pop, rock, and disco/funk, ’80s pop and rock, ’90s to the present pop and rock.
I like a lot of the artists but some of the songs during the day are on the lighter side for my taste and some songs are really cheesy, i.e., “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”
My taste in music is closer to the harder edged music like Metallica, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, & Def Leppard. I do, however, like Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Prince, Madonna, The Cars, Talking Heads, U2 (I never hear them on 98.9), Talking Heads, Ramones, as well as Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Blink 182, and Green Day.
Thus, if 98.9 can pick up the tempo and play harder edged music in the mix, I will visit them on the FM dial more frequently.

THANK GOODNESS!! I am in love. I was on the verge of buying satallite radio until LIBERTY. WOO HOO!! I dance around like an idiot all day…I love it.
September 30th, 2005 at 2:23 pm
Thank god - finally some real variety. Richmond has needed a station to put the heat on 96.5, 98.1, 103.7, and every other station that sticks to its tired formulaic playlist. Hope it succeeds! It went straight to my number one radio spot.

Want to know if they do Live remotes?
I’m looking for a telephone no.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. It seems like every bitty town across the USA has better stations than Richond…not anymore. Please…keep it up. Btw…love the Skid Row !!

I am an old school radio disc jockey who has lived in Tidewater until August of 2005. I was very disappointed with Richmond radio, ie; 96.5,103.7 and so on… That was until LIBERTY signed on! The mix of old and new, the forgotten classics that make you say “Wow!! I forgot that song”. This format is enjoying great ratings all across the country, and I can think of no other market that needed it more desperately than Richmond!!! It makes you not want to change the channel when a song you don’t really care for comes on, because you might miss one you really want to hear next!!! The one suggestion I would offer (being an old “jock”) is to add LOCAL personalities to the station. Music this good deserves to be delivered with personality, humor, and excitement! Not “canned tags” produced in a studio somewhere in the Midwest. That is what distinguishes you from satellite. I of course will offer my services if you are so inclined. Either way, keep up the good work!!! And I will keep listening!!!

Finally a station that plays real music. I hope that it stays in Richmond. You got you a new listener morning, noon and night.

When you guys start to have commercials
PLEASE NO HAYNES OR THE DUMP!!!!!!!
October 13th, 2005 at 8:48 pm
I’ve been listening to Liberty for the past week or so, but I’m not terribly impressed. First, I like jocks - it feels like I’m listening to a machine without a human voice to break up the music. Don’t particularly want time&temp or traffic, but a little human intrusion would make things rock a little more.
Secondly, there just isn’t enough variety yet, or at least nothing much I can’t hear by running up or down the dial. I’d really much rather hear Clash or Madness than yet another CorpRock anthem from 1975. And I’d FAR rather hear something new (to me, at least) than something I spent the ’70s and ’80s changing the station to avoid.
When I do hear something new that I like, I have no idea what it is, because - surprise! - there’s no jock to back-announce it.
I’m willing to give it a shot, simply because you don’t reject a new radio presence out of hand without first allowing it to find its own niche. Chances are it won’t be for me - my tastes are eclectic and NOT the sort of thing most stations program for - but if they lay off the soft-rock and add more hard-edged music to the playlist, I’ll be more willing to give the CD player a rest.

Freedom is a good thing!! 98.9 “Liberates” me from the “demographically correct” (other) radio stations that play the same play list over and over, maybe a different day but its all the same stuff. No, I take that back- 103.7 plays the same song at least 4 times a day if it is “popular”. I just want to add that I emailed in a list of about 50 songs and I have heard just about every one of them!! I love the variety of genres, styles and artists, you never know what you will hear next! If there is one I don’t like, I usually love the next 5 or 8 after that. I like more upbeat tempo music, something that ROCKS or you can dance to it..So Please Liberty don’t play Celine, Marc Anthony, Bette Midler or Manilow. Keep it Rockin, add in some surprises like Ozzy, Fountains of Wayne, Oasis, Soundgarden, Collective Soul, Counting Crows, Black Crows, 80’s stuff, 90’s dance music, Bryan Adams, Foo Fighters, Prince (early and later stuff), just about anything BUT slow boring ballads!
Keep up the great work!! I listen at work all day.

Love the variety! It’s better than making my own mix on a CD for the car.
This station has my support for success.
October 27th, 2005 at 11:48 am
This radio station is absolutely awesome!!!!! I love the fact that there is continuous music and no DJ’s or commercials. I listen all day long at work and in the car!!!! The variety is what Richmond has needed for a long time. Some of the other radio stations play the same thing all the time over and over. I really hope 98.9 is here to stay and not a fly by night station. Keep up the great music!!!!!
October 27th, 2005 at 11:36 pm
Yeah, they “play anything”- as long as its Pop-Rock that is. I have yet to hear any Leon Redbone, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, Sr or any good Country music at all. No Jazz or Classical either. I guess this kinda music would appeal to conventional people, but what about those of us who like music outside the Pop-Rock genre?
They dont really play anything at all. Most of the songs they play I can hear on any othe FM station.

i love what i am hearing but i don’t know what it is! please announce names of songs or is there a website i can look them up on?

Great format! You’ve really created a station worth something here in Richmond. I recommend including some rarely played artists such as; Nancy Griffith; Lyle Lovitt; Ben Folds; and maybe some good Jazz once and a while like Diane Krall.

I love the new radio station! It keeps me going all day at work.

Can I get you on the internet? I would like to listen to you at work but do not see how to listen live on the internet.

I have lived in Richmond for 40+ years and this has got to be the best radio station to come here. Please become a perm button on my radio. You guys are by far the best!
January 22nd, 2006 at 3:06 pm
Thank god 98.9 is on the air. I do hope they DO NOT ADD local personalities, and all the garbage that comes with it. If they do that, then they are like everyone else. (and I’m back to listening to CDs) I listen to the radio for the MUSIC, not to hear someone rant, and doing stupid things trying to keep you interested. For DJ’s who don’t get this, I will put it simply: ITS THE MUSIC, STUPID!
January 30th, 2006 at 7:42 pm
I know that they are looking for “jocks” I have seen a few help wanted ads for them. I don’t expect them to be a feed for long. This station is awesome. I hope that the owner of the majority of the stations in Richmond won’t buy them out and screw it all up !
February 13th, 2006 at 3:20 pm
like to know if there is any work to setting up a web page to listen to the station live
February 14th, 2006 at 3:26 pm
love your station, are you on the internet.
March 20th, 2006 at 1:00 pm
Finally……….don’t change a thing.
Whenever I tell people about Liberty they ALL say….”yeh!! I’m already listening to it”!
Thanks for the variety.
March 22nd, 2006 at 5:46 pm
Please play The Drive By Truckers. The best band you never heard of !!! New release on New West Records out on April 18th called “A Blessing and a Curse”. Possibly on Conan O`Brien that same night. Maybe then I will listen to Richmond radio….
If I could find an address for y`all I would bring you a cd of Feb. 14, the first single from the new disc. I live within shouting distance of the station.
March 28th, 2006 at 3:32 pm
Thank God-finally a great radio station in Richmond. The diversity of music is WONDERFUL and as long as I’ve listening to you I don’t remember hearing the same song twice! My radio station in my office and my car will never be moved again!!
March 29th, 2006 at 8:28 pm
Yeah, I agree with what that Meade guy said. They say they play “anything” but its the same Pop Rock stuff you can hear on any station. They dont play any country or classical music so no, they dont play “everything”. I get so dang annoyed when I hear that announcement when they say “we play anything” I keep shaking my head- no you dont!
April 28th, 2006 at 5:28 pm
You guys started out really HOT! But that has seemed to fizzle fast. In case you didn’t know, there are female artists. It is Friday evening and in an hour and a half all I have heard is ROCK bands or males. I guess you play everything (Except a variety) !!!!!
May 1st, 2006 at 2:01 pm
I now listen to 98.9 at work. Love the assortment of artists, but please play more of a variety by each artist (e.g., instead of “Born in the U.S.A.” over and over, choose from the myriad of other Springsteen songs). And, please please please - don’t EVER hire disc jockeys. That’s what I like about your station! I want to hear music when I turn on the radio, not some loud-mouth egomaniac mindlessly yakking away. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!
May 18th, 2006 at 10:43 am
I have greatly enjoyed your station and it’s format of programming and everyone in my office enjoy’s it also. However we all object to the playing any song by the former “Cat Stevens”. We understand your motto of “We play Anything” however playing songs by someone who has contributed large sums of money made from the sales of music in this country to terrorist origizations for action aginst the US and it’s citizens just does not seem right. Apart from this issue we all here enjoy your station and the new direction you have taken.

LOVE 98.9 Liberty! I have totally switched from Lite 98 to 98.9 Liberty. Even better than my IPod! Seems like everybody is listening to 98.9 these days! Keep it up!!!
August 2nd, 2006 at 11:11 am
OHHH NOOOO!!!! They play Haynes & Dump commercials……….
Since you play some 60’s songs what about The Monkees?
August 23rd, 2006 at 9:24 am
For a station that doesn’t have to pay DJ salaries - THERE SURE ARE A LOT OF COMMERCIALS! Seems like as many(if not more)as a fully staffed station. I’m going from listening non stop to switching stations again.Greed is a terrible thing!

Hello, Iam a “KISS” fan big time. I love “kiss”.
I love their music. I’m sure you know who they are. They are from the 70s age. Can you please play their music also. You have played everything else, why not them? I would really appreciate it. Keep their legacy alive. Thanks.
L.Wells Of Chester, Va. For “KISS ARMY”. Keep
on rockin!
P.S. When you begin to play them, please play their music more often. Iam also a fan of their web site.

As a professional DJ entertainer, I travel up an down the east coast for my business events. Earlier this month I picked up Liberty (98.9) for over 2 hours as I traveled through Virginia. I enjoyed the variety of music but I did notice frequent commercial interruptions. However, I can understand that initially a new radio station needs to generate some revenue with advertising and sponsorships. Its sounds like Liberty (98.9) has been active in the community and they supply a listener-driven music play list.

I really like this station. It seems to know what I am up and down the dial looking for and I don’t have to listen to…we’re going green, crap.
Keep up the great music and I’ll keep listening.

Love the station but can’t pick up at work. Lite 98 overtakes everything else. Would listen all day every day if on internet but I can’t find.
